The Intelligent Eye – The Art of Leadership When Facing Challenges

Published by Gunnar Westling, February 7, 2011. 2 responses.

Over the last years, we at Fram have occasionally used art as a way to provoke managers to think in new ways about important business challenges.

According to David Perkins in his excellent book “the intelligent eye”, most of us just quickly “surf” art 30 seconds when looking at an image at galleries or museums. In short, this means that we just further reinforce our thinking about the world and ourself within it. But, if we force ourselves to really interact with a peace of art for several minutes, we often need to confront our own thinking about important matters.
To begin to view art and take the risk of coming up with new thinking and seeing about a matter of importance to you, use this guide.

Much along the same line, an interesting article was published on Feb 6 in the Swedish newspaper “Dagens Nyheter”. In the article, an experiment by Julia Romanowska at Karolinska Institute was described, where music and poetry showed a lot stronger positive effect on leadership than traditional leadership courses. Here´s a link to the article.

Mmm. Coolt att påminna sig om konst. Och detta att stanna lite längre, och ännu lite längre. I denna skynda-skynda-värld.

During my four years of master level studies in economics and business administration, we never really dealt with the ecological fundamentals underpinning the economy. And I didn’t realise back then that they were missing.
I started to wake up to these fundamentals [...]

Too much of a challenge – keeping track of mental health

At Fram, we support leaders and group of leaders in mastering complex challenges. Challenges that often are at the frontier, that is not being part of the normal running of the business or the organisation.
These kind of challenges put extra demands on the mental condition of the leader. These extra demands often mean that the [...]

Sparking corporate change with metaphors

I recently interviewed each top manager of a company about their macro and business environment as part of their strategy process. I was using the PESTEL-framework (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal Factors) as a basis for most questions, but I also folded in the following question:
“Describe your company’s capabilities by means of and [...]

The Wisdom of Crowds

The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations, published in 2004, is a book written by James Surowiecki about the aggregation of information in groups, resulting in decisions that are often better than could have been made by any single member [...]
